Backyard Dreams

 (Dedicata a Laufey)

Barefoot running through the dirt
Our laughter louder than the birds
The world was small but it felt so wide
A jungle gym where we could hide

Backyard dreams and firefly skies
Climbing trees
Reaching so high
We didn’t know what life would mean
We just lived in our backyard dreams

Kool-Aid stains on my favorite shirt
Mom called us in but we’d stay till it hurt
The streetlights blinked like they were stars
We never cared about the passing cars

Do you remember the summer rain
Dancing wild like we had no chains

Backyard dreams and firefly skies
Climbing trees
Reaching so high
We didn’t know what life would mean
We just lived in our backyard dreams

Now I look back
The years feel light
But they carried us through every fight
From scraped up knees to broken hearts
That little yard made us who we are
